If you’re planning a move, you might want to consider taking the plunge to sort through your belongings. Not only can a big declutter save you time and energy on both ends of your move, but it can also help save you money, because the more stuff you have, the more it costs to move it.
Decluttering before you move means you won’t spend time packing up things you no longer want or need.
Here are some tips to help you declutter before a move:
Step 1: Understand the process
Decluttering can be very overwhelming. Keep reminding yourself of how great it’ll feel to start fresh in your new space. It’s a really cleansing feeling to get rid of things that no longer serve a purpose in your life, or your home.
Step 2: Start early
People usually have more stuff then they realise so don’t put off the decluttering process. Start early so that you feel organised and the process will be smooth and stress free.
Step 3: Begin with the areas you use the least
To ease yourself into the process, a good place to begin is the areas you don’t use often. Your attic or garage is always a great starting point. That way, by the time you reach the really important stuff, you’ll be a pro! Pack the things you’re keeping into boxes or plastic tubs as you go! tackling
Step 4: Make piles
Step 5: Get your kids to help
It’s important to keep the kids involved when it comes to their own things. By teaching them the skills of letting go or donating, you’ll be teaching them life skills that they will have forever.
Step 6: Ask for help if you need
Don’t be shy to ask for help. Friends and family really summarise the saying “many hands make light work”. If you are organised and clear with your instructions, you’ll be amazed at how much you can get through together. Also remember that there’s the option of getting professional help too!!
Step 7: Go through the entire house
By decluttering every room in your home, you will feel mentally ready to move. Leave no item unsorted. That way, when you get to your new home, the items you put away are the things that bring you joy – they are the things you want and need.
Happy decluttering. Happy packing. And remember the best way to find out what we really need is to get rid of what we don’t!!!
